Why Is My Solar Inverter Beeping?

An audible alarm from your inverter is designed to grab your attention. Here is what your solar system is trying to tell you.

Hearing a constant beep or alarm from your garage or loft can be alarming. Solar inverters are generally silent, so an audible noise almost always indicates a state change or a fault that requires attention.

What The Beeps Mean

1. Low Battery (Hybrid Only)

If you have a hybrid system, the inverter often beeps when the battery drops below a critical threshold (e.g., 10%) to warn you that backup power is about to cut off.

2. System Overload

Drawing more power than the inverter can handle (e.g., running a kettle, oven, and shower simultaneously during a power cut) will trigger an overload alarm.

3. Isolation Fault

Common in wet weather. This means moisture has entered the system (panels, cables, or inverter), causing current to leak to the ground. This is a safety hazard.

4. Grid Fault

If there is a power cut or the grid voltage fluctuates outside safe parameters, the inverter will disconnect for safety and may beep to notify you.

Troubleshooting Guide

  1. Check the Display: The beep is usually accompanied by an error code or message on the LCD screen (e.g., "Earth Fault" or "EPS Overload"). Note this down immediately.
  2. Perform a Restart: Turn off the AC isolator (near the inverter), then the DC isolator. Wait 5 minutes. Turn the DC on first, then the AC.
  3. Reduce Load: If running on battery backup, unplug high-draw appliances immediately.
  4. Check the Weather: If it is raining heavily and you see "Isolation Fault," turn the system off and wait for it to dry out. If it persists, you need an engineer.

When to Call a Professional

If the beeping persists after a reset, or if the error message indicates an internal hardware failure (like "Relay Stick" or "Bus Volt Fault"), you need a professional repair or replacement.

WARNING: Never attempt to open the inverter casing yourself. High voltage DC electricity is lethal.
