Solar Inverter Red Light: Top 5 Reasons & Fixes

Green means good. Red means stop. If your inverter light is red, you are likely losing money. Here is how to diagnose the issue.

Under normal operation, your inverter should display a solid or flashing green light during the day. A solid red light indicates a fault state where power generation has ceased to protect the system or the grid.

Top 5 Reasons for a Red Light

1. Grid Failure / Power Cut

The most common reason. If there is a power cut in your street, your inverter MUST shut down instantly for safety. Check if your other household appliances are working.

2. Isolation Fault

This indicates a breakdown in insulation, usually due to water ingress in cable connectors or damaged panels. The inverter detects current leaking to earth and shuts down.

3. Overheating

If the inverter is installed in a hot loft or direct sunlight, it may reach its thermal limit (often 60°C+) and trigger a red light until it cools down.

4. Internal Component Fault

If the screen shows "Relay Failure," "DC Bus High," or "EEPROM Error," an internal circuit board has failed. This usually requires a replacement unit.

5. Emergency Stop Pressed

Some commercial or battery systems have an external emergency stop button. If this has been bumped, the system will lock out.

3-Step Troubleshooting

  1. Check Your Breakers: Go to your fuse box / consumer unit. Has the solar PV breaker tripped? If so, try flipping it back on ONCE. If it trips again immediately, DO NOT force it. Call an electrician.
  2. Read the Error Code: Look at the LCD screen on the inverter. A red light tells you there is a problem; the text tells you what the problem is (e.g., "Error 20").
  3. The "Hard Reset": Turn off the AC isolator (red/yellow switch). Turn off the DC isolator (black rotary switch). Wait for all lights to die (approx 2 mins). Turn AC on, then DC on.

When a Reset Doesn't Work

If the red light returns immediately after a reset, or stays on permanently, the unit is faulty. Continuing to run a faulty inverter can damage your panels or present a fire risk.
